Coconut Generation

The Next Generation of Asian Indians

This week, I am attending a second generation network conference of Asian American pastors of Christian Missionary Alliance denomination. There were second gen leaders from Lao, Vietnam, Cambodia, China, Hmong, Korea, India etc. When it comes to second generation (I really do believe) there is so much we all can learn from each other, though our cultures and churches have many unique issues.

It was great fun to hang out with AA leaders last night and I am looking forward to my session on Lessons from the Coconut Generation this evening. I wish more of emerging leaders get to hang out with others like and similar to them. I have met young coconut leaders who think, they are the only one of their kind and carry the weight of the whole second generation upon themselves. How sad!

One thing I was pleasantly surprised over Coconut book tour was large number of younger leaders who are in seminary or considering ministry calling all over North America. God is doing something awesome with this generation. I am excited to be part of a divine drama unfolding right before our eyes!

There is an idea of gathering second generation leaders of Asian Indian community in North America. Any one interested?

Wow, thrilled to hear of this amazing gathering! Would you mind if I followed-up with a phone call to learn more about what CMA is doing with the 2nd generation? Do you think it’d be possible to have this kind of a gathering for all kinds of 2nd generation Asian American Christian leaders regardless of denominational affiliation?

That would be great! But most of gathering are taking place are within denominations or a particular ethnic group. I hope some day soon we can gather as larger AA-2nd Gen.

BTW, your book was promoted at the event.

Cocogen, please tell us how the conference went! I am also interested in gathering 2nd Gen AA’s together in a national conference. Hey DJ, how are you doing?

    Hey John,

It was a great gathering. I really see the power of encouragement and cross fertilization of ideas at such networking conferences. Asian cultures are so much alike each other and I really believe there is much to learn from each other. Much more than from western socieites. It is no more one or the other, but making best of both worlds, will be an essential trait for AA ministry leadership.

Of course, there will time for denominational polity and specific issues. Some of prevailing models, leadership training and ideas were also shared. They are planning to meet at least once a year. Also it is geat to see their hq support on next gen ministry.

Will any of you be there at Urbana next month? Maybe we can gather together various campus and church AA leaders to explore what it takes to create an AA forum? Or we could create an online forum for emerging AA leaders? Any ideas?

Hello, glad to know that God is rising up a new leadership from among the Asians to lead the church to complete the last days history of the Church on earth.
I am ministering among the Indians in Singapore & Malaysia. Does anyone has any discipleship material which will be very suitable for the second generation Indian Christians in this region? Thanks.

    Wilfred Joseph
